SloveniaMost young women in Slovenia travel from small towns to Ljubljana, the capital, to complete their University studies. There are a few residences provided for students, but most young women must find affordable accommodations on their own. These living situations do not always provide an environment conducive for learning, studying, or personal growth. Program Title: University Student Residence Location: Ljubljana, Slovenia Requested NGO and Partner: Vintgar University Student Residence Program Summary: Vintgar, a Slovenian NGO, has had a presence in Ljubljana since 2005 and has provided young women and girls with educational and leadership opportunities, and has also made efforts to curb the effects of communism. Vintgar addresses two main issues that young women in Slovenia deal with: finding safe, quality, and affordable residences while completing their University studies, and battling the old communist mindset of intolerance and fear of differing opinions.
Vintgar has seen how poor student living conditions have negatively affected young women's studies, personal growth, and well-being, and provides a solution through their own student residences. The residences offer a peer environment for students in which they can pursue their studies in a focused manner. This residence not only provides accommodations, but also acts as a place where young women can come and participate in academic, social, and service activities. In 2009, Vintgar provided activities for nearly 200 young women. The core messages of these activities are: thinking globally, not to fear or judge those who have differing opinions, and the spirit of service and leadership. The lingering effects of communism have stunted the growth of some of these ideas. The funding from SCA will cover costs attached to living in Vintgar for 10 students and costs of Vintgar activities in 2010.
