PolandDespite Poland's present robust economy, it still has one of the highest unemployment rates in the EU, 9.7%. Unemployment among the female labor force is even higher, standing at 19%. The labor market in particular will be vital to shaping society and increasing the well being of Poles. Before one can successfully enter into employment, they must receive character development, general education, and acquire technical skills that will enable them to thrive in the labor market. Receiving an education along with the confidence to lead will enable Poland's young female population to live and work in a dignified and fulfilling manner and avoid at-risk situations that can lead to exploitation, prostitution, and abduction. Program Title: Klub Filary: A Leadership Center for Girls Location: Warsaw, Poland Requested NGO and Partner: Stowarzyszenie Podnoszenia Kwalifikacji Kobiet (SPKK) Klub Filary: A Leadership Center for Girls Program Summary: Klub Filary was created in 1997 to give girls and young women living in and around Warsaw a place to spend their free time. In general, the youth in Poland often lack affordable opportunities to spend their free time wisely, and are unsupervised after school while their parents are still working. Klub Filary fills this need by offering after school, weekend, and summer programs.
At Klub Filary, girls can receive academic assistance through weekly homework help and monthly educational seminars, learn a new language, go on service trips, or participate in cooking classes, among many other activities. Character development is also implemented by teaching girls to be honest, ethical, hardworking, and tolerant and open-minded towards their peers. The lessons and skills taught at Klub Filary ultimately teach girls to be the leaders that Poland needs. Klub Filary also offers informal seminars for parents and young professionals so that they may continue their social education, communication, and leadership skills.
Due to growing interest and participation, Klub Filary's current accommodations are too small. Last year, Klub Filary was able to reach nearly 200 girls and parents. In 2010 they hope to reach out to 500 girls and parents.
